An old wartime railroad was turned into a wonderful cycle path in 2013! The history of this railroad takes us from Charlemagne's Middle Ages through the times of the world wars to the present day. It connects the border region of Aachen with East Belgium and Luxembourg. The Vennbahn Cycle Route brings a piece of Europe to life in a very tangible way. The 130-kilometre route meanders along the national border and then into the Grand Duchy. But the educational vacation does not stop here: The route continues through the hilly Luxembourg countryside on good cycle paths to the border triangle (D-F-LUX) near Schengen on the Moselle. Schengen is the place that stands for European integration and freedom of movement!
On the way to Schengen, participants encounter European history, European images of the world and European images of people. Including the human image of the Schengen Agreement: to have trust in one's neighbors and to dismantle borders where they are no longer necessary.
Objective:
The participants:
- become aware of the value of European freedom of movement
- deal with the prerequisites for the European idea, which aims to secure peace within Europe with the Schengen agreements
- gain an insight into life in neighboring European countries
- deepen their knowledge of history by examining images of people and the world from the Middle Ages, Charlemagne and the World Wars.
- examine their own attitude towards people and nature by looking at the relationships between plants, animals and people.
Target group:
- Those interested in the idea of peace in Europe and the effects of wars on the population and landscape
- Interested parties who deal with history politically or professionally
- Those committed against racism & fascism
- Those interested in nature and nature conservation
*The seminar is recognized as educational leave for continuing political education in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Thuringia and Berlin. The event is organized in cooperation with the Bildungswerk der Heinrich Böll Stiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen e. V.
